2nd Congress of the Sawmill Industry of Southeast Europe to be Held in Eastern Croatia on October 25th 16. 09. 2011
On October 25th this year, Slavonski Brod, Croatia, will once again host the Congress of the Sawmill Industry of Southeast Europe, where 400 representatives of the sawmill industry from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia, technology suppliers from Germany, Austria, Italy and France, as well as professional experts from the European Union are schedule to participate. The majority of sawmill industry representatives from the countries of the Region give similar assessment of the current conditions in the primary wood-processing sector. Alongside countless pessimistic statements in which many express desire to shut down their sawmills, but are unable to do so due to bank loans, there are occasional affirmative viewpoints, based on better exploitation of local raw material. All this results in a number of acquisitions and takeovers in the sawmill market. Foreign experts emphasize the advantages of quality forest resources in the Balkans, thus find the current state of sawmills going out of business illogical. Difference of interests and the lack of lobbies which would support this branch of economy can be solved by means of professional associations in the future, on the basis of similar European experiences. Over 2,500 sawmills of different size and technological level of processing currently operate in Southeast Europe. Together with forestry, primary wood-processing sector employs 130,000 people in this part of Europe, who process over 7 million cubic meters of sawmill timber. More than 20 million m3 of lumber is cut down in the countries of the Region annually. Thus, wood can be a good basis for regional development, which was the case in the past. According to the European Organization of the Sawmill Industry (EOS), expected co-organizer of this year’s Congress, and the European Timber Trade Federation (ETTF), the wood-processing industry is recovering from the crisis, which will result in the growth of lumber production in Europe, compared to last year. 15. 04. 2012 u 00:42h 2 things to not miss in Istanbul:Rumeli Hisari a frreotss built by the Ottomans to help conquer Constantinople, it offers some incredible views. It's only $2 to enter and you can climb all over the frreotss. Be sure to get a Turkish breakfast at highly acclaimed restaurant Kale, less than a block away. The Prince's Islands a short ferry ride from the Asian shore of Istanbul, these are well worth the detour from the normal tourist path. I personally like Kinaliada and Heybeliada a lot more than more crowded Buyukada.
